PS2 Disk Read Error Woes - RESOLVED!

Well, like many folks who own a first or second generation PS2, I have been experiencing MANY woes... mainly, every time I put in a game, it was like a crap shoot if it would actually pick up the disk and read it. Ah, the many times I saw that horrible "Disk Read Error" message... constantly restarting, rebooting, etc. until FINALLY the disk would show up.

This last week... all I could get were the "DRE" message. No gaming on the PS2.

So I did some research - it's a VERY common problem. The main solution? Pay to send it to Sony, pay to have them fix it, and pay to have them send it back. All for about the cost of a new PS2. OR - throw it away, and buy a new PS2.

Well, in order to save $150, just money that didn't need to be spent - I set out to fix it myself. The warranty is alreday expired... so who cares? It already didn't play games or anything else, why not take the risk before running out to get a new one, right?

And followed the instructions EXACTLY.

Result? I have a working PS2 - with NO Disk Read Errors!!

If you're experiencing this issue, I cannot recommend it enough. It's really easy to do if you do it just like they say.

Took me about 20 minutes too.

Never had that issue with my PS2, Pairadocs. But if that solves your problem at the lowest cost, good for you [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

I took mine to a licensed Sony somethign or other (might've been an EB) and they actually replaced it, free [img]eek.gif[/img]


but for some reason, neither will read my GTA3 or Vice City discs anymore, I get into the game, and about 5 minutes into play, it tells me it had an error reading the disc

Well, if they did it for free, it was probably still under warranty... plus, they *were* doing it free for a while. I've been told they charge now. The closest official Sony repair place is a two hour drive from here.

But, it works great, and I did it on my own. They probably just cleaned your laser eye... which is the first part of this fix. The other part is adjusting the angle of the laser eye with the white wheel as outlined in the tutorial. I was having some problems with the GTA games when I first cleaned it, then did the adjustments, and now everything works hunkey-dorey.
